In the summer of 2002, Kobe Bryant was fresh off a three-peat of NBA championships. Kobe had also accumulated an array of other accolades by that time, such as All-NBA and All-Star selections. "Frobe", as he was referred to before shaving his head and changing his number, was seemingly at the peak of his stardom. Despite having a proven arsenal of strengths developed over his first six years in the NBA, Kobe still had one clear weakness - his shoe deal with Adidas. Adidas' and Kobe no longer saw eye to eye, and may never actually have, so Kobe bought himself out of the contract. Adidas accepted this buyout under the condition that Kobe could not sign with another brand until 2003. As a result, Kobe completely exercised his sneaker freedom during the 2002-2003 NBA season.
Aside from the history of what actually happened, this situation is so fun to me. You will rarely ever see a player of Kobe's caliber at that time wear as many different models and brands as Kobe did. This lead to the creation of many Kobe PE's that would have previously been very unlikely, and it seems that everyday I see a new picture of something that Kobe wore that season.
